We Won’t Irresponsibly Say “Adopt Bioplastics Right Now”

Rather than rushing bioplastics, we propose practical, right-sized environmental actions that balance cost and impact. A simple approach — “reshape one thing and replace another” — lets anyone start now at low cost and builds a sustainable 3R cycle.

We Won’t Irresponsibly Say “Adopt Bioplastics Right Now”

As environmental awareness grows, many companies are embarking on various initiatives. A familiar example is Starbucks’ announcement to adopt biomass straws. Yet biomass products still cost more to produce, making immediate, universal adoption difficult.

  • “If adoption grows, prices will drop.”
  • “Wider use will reveal pros and cons.”
  • “Then the products will improve.”
  • “We’ll adopt them once they mature.”
  • “Hope everyone else gets us there quickly.”

Many companies might be looking around and thinking this way.

But the real focus should not be our surroundings — it should be our future.

The cost–environment dilemma

Companies cannot ignore cost if they are to survive. Balancing environmental efforts and cost remains a perennial challenge.

So, what does the “ideal form of environmental action” look like for companies? Considering this may turn yesterday’s “reasons not to start” into tomorrow’s “reasons to begin.”

Our view of the ideal

Ideal Explanation
Simple to start now No need to wait for brand-new products or technologies
Low initial cost Minimal investment for adoption and operations
Some tangible return Not mere goodwill — visible, concrete benefits
Immediate effect Changes the current situation, not just a long-term bet
Sustainable cycle Can scale into an enduring 3R loop

The motivation to begin is rarely just “doing the right thing.” If returns are vague — like “brand uplift” or “social conformity” — it’s hard to act.

That’s why we will not say, “Bioplastics are still costly, but adopt them right now for the environment!”

Right-sized actions

Environmental care is a big theme, but what we can actually do tends to be small. One of our answers is the simple idea to “reshape one thing and replace another.”

Point Practical effect
Simple to start now Works broadly — easy to adopt in many places
Low initial cost Stays within small-capex, expensed asset thresholds
Some tangible return Eliminates disposal/purchase costs and saves greatly
Immediate effect Delivers visible change on the ground
Sustainable cycle Spreads 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) benefits industry-wide

“Reshape one thing and replace another” — that alone can create wide-reaching ripple effects.

To begin together

We’ve already started. The impact is still small, but like-minded partners can amplify it.

Those who “haven’t started yet,” and those who “will start now.” Our “everyone” includes “us,” and your “everyone” includes “you.” We want to begin with you.
